Our Reality
I have found myself numerously sitting in a dorm room or at a lunch table with three or four other people where no one converses. Everyone is looking down at their phones, concerning themselves with things that most likely are not important. How are we, as a society, going to make connections with people around us, if we can't even have a casual conversation? The addiction to social media is causing people to not know how to make connections with people, unless you're typing it in text message, a tweet, or a facebook post. Next time when you are hanging out with a group of friends, try putting your phone down and seeing how quickly a social setting can change when you're not checking that phone 24/7.
One Last Glance
I have caught myself saying this phrase at times with text messages while driving. Unfortunately the amount of people who text and drive are increasing. When you're driving and you hear that text tone go off, all you want to do is look at your phone. You think, “Well, there is enough room between my car and the one in front”, or that you can multi-task and text without looking at your phone. But even taking your eye off the road for that split second could not only possibly end your life, but anyone else’s who is on the road with you. “21% of teenagers ages of 15-19 involved in fatal crashes were know to be distracted by the use of a cell phone.” It is hard to believe that with these statistics along with the “Take The Pledge” commercials we see on tv, that kids are continuing to text and drive. How can you watch the countless stories of parents losing their children because of texting and driving accidents and still pick up your phone while driving? I would be able to put my parents through that kind of pain. So, I took the pledge myself and now I’m more cautious than ever while driving. I encourage people to browse on the “Take The Pledge” link and take it for themselves.
The constant opportunity to socialize with people through cell phones is a serious problem in society due to social media addiction. But what is more appalling is that people are willing to risk their lives and others to check a measly text message, which could definitely wait. The public needs to know of this addiction and help others to be aware of the situation. The first step starts with you, are you ready to commit to “Take the Pledge”?
