How did Ted Bundy get away with killing over 30 females in a matter of four years? Could this infamous serial killer simply put on an invisibility cloak and become anonymous? No one really thinks of a killer this way until someone else puts it into perspective. The motivation for a serial killer is usually based on psychological gratification. Additionally, the motive for a cyberbully is typically social gratification. Although this motive may or may not be intentional, cyber bullying is a serious problem. Many do not even realize they are taking part in it until they hear on the news the next day that a fellow classmate has committed suicide. In the recent case of Rebecca Ann Sedwick, the attorney, Charlie Crist claimed “When somebody is being this abusive to another human being, it's hard to protect them because it's hard to detect it. This is not like somebody being shoved at a playground.”
The cloak
With the protection of a computer screen many people of all ages are becoming more comfortable and are beginning to blurt out anything. I feel as though everyone is able to feel fearless when there is a computer screen in the way, whether they choose to show this or not is their decision. I bet every person reading this has thought at least one bad thing about someone, but who will actually say those things to them in person?
The majority of social media websites aid in cyberbullying whether they make you anonymous or not. They each give you direct access to anyone at anytime. The bullying can start by viewing a photo, taking a status the wrong way or just by hearing a rumor. With this access, the bullying can start within moments. Some of the more popular sites are:
-ask.fm
-Vine
With websites like ask.fm, where you are able to ask the person a question or just say something to them AND have an option of it being anonymous; there is no way that cyberbullying isn’t becoming more common and easier to access. Anyone can say anything they want to that person no matter how hurtful it is, and sometimes that one last comment could just be the last straw. However, some people targeted by anonymous bullies are able to take advantage of the situation, like Caitlin Kinsella who used her experience to share the dangers of social media websites like ask.fm. Caitlin was bullied about being in beauty pageants, but the bullying didn't stop her. She used her story during her pageants and was able to spread the word express importance of the danger social media is offering.
The effects
No one can really understands the pain and loneliness a bullied victim feels until they have to experience it themselves. You might think you are just saying one little thing, but that one comment could be just another hurtful thing being said to them, and quite possibly the last.
Not even their parents would get a goodbye.
The solution
The worst part is, no one ever hears the cries for help to make it stop, until it is too late. The best way to stop this quickly spreading crime wave is to be informed and inform others. When others hear your story, they will be more likely to spread the word that cyberbullying needs to stop. Hopefully, over time a deeper solution will be made and cyberbullying will become a thing of the past.
